HOW DO PEOPLE CHANGE?

CAN PEOPLE CHANGE FROM THE OUTSIDE-IN?

Personal Trainers show us, absolutely yes! When someone begins to work out and eat more healthily and slowly but surely loses weight and tones up on the outside they begin to feel much more alive on the inside. The changes on the outside indeed manifest themselves on the inside leaving clients more confident and more able to translate heightened self-esteem and new inner strength into other areas of their life. And sure enough we can observe changes on the outside in terms of weight loss and improved fitness altering how they feel about themselves on the inside and therefore changes from the outside-in.

CAN PEOPLE CHANGE FROM THE INSIDE-OUT?

Personal Trainers also show us that for some clients exercise and nutritional guidance just doesn’t work. Some clients don’t respond as well to the same highly motivational approach with tailored carefully considered exercise and nutritional intervention. So what is going on? Well, Maxwell Maltz teaches us in his book Psycho-cybernetics sometimes people need to make changes on the inside before they can create the changes they want on the outside indeed Gok Wan in his work to help people feel good naked shows us sometimes changing our internal environment is all clients require. Changing our internal set-point therefore precedes permanent change in our weight, health and fitness. Once people address these internal issues then people can change from the inside-out. Helping people release the brakes on the inside and therefore tackling more mindset based issues therefore becomes much more important that details around what new diet or exercise regime to follow.

IMPLICATIONS FOR TRAINERS

As a Personal Trainer we need to be ready for both and understand for some clients automatic programming prevents them from moving forward with a sensible exercise and eating plan and that some inside work needs to be done before permanent results can be achieved.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CLIENTS

Clients too should understand that if they aren’t getting what they want from working out and dieting or even from their Personal Trainer, exercise class or BootCamp their outside-in approach maybe the problem. For many change occurs from the inside-out.

Hope you enjoyed and helps you think more about your role....
